In The Football Times Cup Semi-Final in Alness, Balintore came away with a 3-0 win and now face Halkirk United at Dudgeon Park in Brora - 13.00 k.o. Yesterday afternoon all teams gave a minutes silence before each game as a mark of respect to League treasurer Jock Mackay who sadly died at the age of 63. In an afternoon of cup and league action, the first game to kick off was at Recreation Park, Halkirk and Thurso progressed into the semi-final of The Morris Newton Cup with a convincing 3-0 win against Halkirk United with first half goals from an early Gavin Bremner penalty after Phil Makhouli was upended closing in goal, then a second after 20 minutes from Phil Makhouli laid on by Ross Sutherland, then just before half-time a header from Alan Murray after Ross Sutherland headed the ball across goal. Thurso draw 1-1 in Alness against Alness United in a tough and heated encounter. Brian Gray opened the scoring with a powerful volley but the visitors were pegged back with a back post header by the veteran Ross Jack. Thurso had several chances during the game with Alness keeper Robertson pulling off some fine saves to prevent Thurso running away with the match. It remained stalemate in the second half and ended 1-1 which doesn't really help any of the two for their quest for the championship. Golspie took advantage of Thurso and Alness droping points and now open a three point gap with a 1-0 win away in Balintore. Other results on the day saw Halkirk come from behind, 3-1 down at half-time to win 4-3 at Dornoch and Bunillidh Thistle record a fine 4-1 win at Tain.

Sunday 24th of January 2004
Thurso F.C progressed to their second cup final of the season yesterday afternoon with a convincing 5-0 defeat of league leaders Golspie Sutherland. First half goals from Brian Gray (pen), Jamie MacKenzie and Allan Sutherland effectively killed off the game as a contest then in the seond half Thurso went on to play some good passing football and scored another two goals through Nigel MacKenzie and substitute Phil Makhouli. After the final whistle man of the match Ross Sutherland received a bottle of champagne from Match sponsor Steve Webster of BT Global Services in Thurso who kindly supplied the new match ball from Atlanta Sports. Thurso will now take on Balintore in The PCT Cup Final at Dudgeon Park in Brora on Saturday the 21st of February. Next game is away to Alness on Saturday afternoon in the league.

Friday 9th of January 2004
I have just been informed by Gus Mackay (TFC coaching staff) @ 18.50 that tomorrow's scheduled PCT Cup semi-final at home to Golspie Sutherland has been called off as a mark of respect to former Brora Rangers, Ross County and Golspie player, 44 year old Donald Mackay who has sadly died suddenly after a heart attack. Other MSIS North Caledonian League fixtures due to be played are Balintore V Tain, Bunillidh V Dornoch, Alness United V Bonar Bridge and Halkirk United V Invergordon all with 1.30 p.m kick-offs. I have confirmed with league committee members Robbie Adam and Matt McLelland that the only match off is Thurso V Golspie Sutherland. In it's place Thurso will play an over 35's XI at The Dammies with a 1 p.m kick-off.
Monday 22nd of December 2003
Next game is scheduled to be a home match against current League leaders Golspie Sutherland in The PCT Cup Semi-Final on Saturday the 10th of January 2004. The other fixture I am aware of is Balintore at home to Tain in a league game. Other fixtures to be announced on The North Caledonian League website - www.northcaledonianleague.co.uk
Saturday 20th of December 2003
Winter hit the North Caledonian League season hard but most games took place in cold, wet and windy conditions. The top four sides won their matches with Golspie Sutherland sneaking a 1-0 win late on against Bunillidh Thistle in Helmsdale, Alness United hammering Dornoch 7-1 at home, Balintore securing a fine 3-0 win away at Invergordon and in The Caithness Derby game Thurso maintined their unbeaten record against Halkirk United since they entered the league in 1998 as they came away with a hard fought 1-0 win at Recreation Park with a single Allan Sutherland strike in the first half. I am awaiting confirmation if the Tain V Bonar game went ahead or not. The next game is to be announced but there will be no games on 27th December 2003 or 3rd of January 2004 so the players will be able to enjoy their christmas and new year without worrying about playing games.
Saturday 13th of December 2003
A full league card was played in The North Caledonian League this afternoon with the top five teams, Golspie, Balintore, Alness, Thurso and Invergordon all defeating the bottom five teams. Golspie Sutherland maintained their lead at the top with a 4-0 home win against Halkirk United, Balintore stayed in second place with a 3-1 wn at home to Dornoch, Alness United hammered Bonar 7-2 away and stay in Third, Thurso beat Tain 5-2 in a tough match at Sir George's Park, Thurso with goals from Gavin Bremner (2 penalties), Willie Inrig (2) and Ross Sutherland and finally Invergordon stayed in fifth, three points behind Thurso with a 2-0 win in Helmsdale against Bunillidh Thistle.
Saturday 6th of December 2003
It was a combination of PCT Cup and league action today. In The North Caledonian League Thurso got a much needed morale boosting win with a 6-0 home win against Dornoch with goals from Gavin Bremner, Alan Sutherland, Alan Murray, Nigel Mackenzie (2) and Phillip Makhouli, Halkirk United hammered Tain St.Duthus 5-0 at Recreation Park and Bonar climbed off the bottom with a 4-3 win against Invergordon. In The PCT Cup Semi-Final Balintore progressed to the Final against either Thurso or Golspie, against Port Services Cup winners Alness United defeating them 4-3 on penalty kicks after a 3-3 draw after extra time. Golspie Sutherland progressed to a semi-final at Thurso in the new year as they defeated Bunillidh Thistle 5-2 after extra time.
Saturday 29th of November 2003
Thurso's title chances were virtually killed off as they were beaten 3-1 at home to Golspie Sutherland. After a goal-less first half with Murray having the best chance to give Thurso the lead it was Thurso who took the lead after 52 minutes when the ball fell to Willie Inrig 20 yards from goal and he unleashed a powerful drive high into the net. Thurso pushed for a second to kill off the game and after 61 minutes Stone equalised at the back post from a cut back from the right, then five minutes later Nicolson scored to give Golspie the lead then the game was killed off as a contest in the 81st minute when Nicolson scored a brilliant strike after beating several Thurso defenders from the edge of the box. Thurso will be looking to pick themselves up from this disapointing defeat when they play a re-arranged league game at home to Dornoch next Saturday with a 1.30 p.m kick-off.
Saturday 22nd of November 2003
Thurso progressed into the semi-finals of The PCT Cup with a second round win 3-2 away to Invergordon with goals from Nigel MacKenzie, Alan Murray and Gavin Bremner. They now have a home tie against either Bunillidh Thistle or Golspie Sutherland to be played on Saturday the 6th of December (1.00 p.m kick-off). Next match is at home to Golspie in the league this Saturday in a crucial match for The home side if they are to retain the title they won last season.
Saturday 8th of November 2003
Thurso progressed into a second round tie away to Invergordon with a tough 3-1 home win aginst Bonar Bridge at The Dammies. After a shaky start and a goal from Bonar's Garry McLeod, Thurso sorted themselves out and equalised via Lee MacDougall before half-time then scored two in the second half via Ross Sutherland and Alan Murray. Thurso have no match this Saturday due to Scotland's play-off V Holland allowing players, supporters and officials of all North Caledonian League clubs to watch the game.
Saturday 1st of November 2003
It was a disapointed Thurso squad who travelled back from Brora last night as Alness United win the first piece of silverware this season when they defeated Thurso on penalties after extra time in a tense game at Dudgeon Park, Brora on a cold November afternoon. The game finished 0-0 after 90 minutes, with Kevin Morris being red carded after a bad tackle at the end of the game, which started of a melee in the centre circle with the referee having problems maintaining order. Then early into extra time, ten man Thurso took the lead through man of the match Jamie MacKenzie, then pegged back with a good finish from Carl Jack. Crucial spot kick misses by Reid and Baker for Thurso handed The Port Services Cup to Alness United. In the MSIS North Caledonian League Golspie Sutherland continued at the top with a fine 4-1 win away in Tain and Balintore kept in touch in second place with a 3-2 home win against Bunillidh Thistle. Halkirk picked themselves up from a defeat last week, with a 1-0 home win against Bonar Bridge and finally there was an incredible 12 goal thriller as Dornoch and Invergordon shared the spoils with a 6-6 draw.
Saturday 25th of October 2003
It was another day of high scoring in The MSIS North Caledonian League Championship as Golspie Sutherland continued on from their 6-1 hammering of Alness last week with a 8-1 defeat of lowly Dornoch at home. This win lifted them above Balintore by three points on to 18 points, with Balintore losing 2-1 away at Alness United. Thurso slipped up on their travels again, with a 1-1 draw at Tain. Bunillidh Thistle continued their brilliant form recently as they bear Bonar 3-0 in Helmsdale and go within two points of Thurso in fifth place. Halkirk United's inconsistency was all too evident again as they were defeated 2-0 at Invergordon. Next weekend sees the chance for Alness and Thurso to play for The first piee of silverware of the season as they fight it out in The Final of The Port Services Cup at Brora. League fixtures on the day sees Balintore playing hosts to in-form Bunillidh Thistle, Invergordon make the short trip to Dornoch, Bonar Bridge make the long trip to Halkirk and Tain St.Duthus take on league leaders Golspie at home.
Saturday 11th of October 2003
Thurso continued their high scoring form from last week with a comfortable 6-1 win at home to Halkirk United this afternoon. They took the lead with a Kevin Morris header after seven minutes followed by a good finishes by Phil Makhouli and Lee MacDougall to take a three goal half time lead. Three other goals followed from Alan Sutherland and a double from Ross Sutherland to take a comanding six goal lead. Halkirk pulled a goal back with a few minutes to go with the goal of the game from Stuart Sinclair who scored with a curling effort into the top corner past Brian Mackay. With Balintore not playing as a mark of respect to one of their long servants to the club, David DC Calderwood, Alness United also took advantage to go second with a 4-0 home win against Tain St.Duthus, above Golspie who dropped to third as they were shocked 2-1 at home against Bunillidh Thistle, who themselves climb the table to seventh. Dornoch also recorded a 2-1 away win at Bonar and climb to sixth place in the table.
Saturday 4th of October 2003
In The Semi-Finals of The Port Services Cup both ties served up nine goals in total as Thurso breezed past Invergordon 5-0 at The Dammies in Thurso thanks to a hat trick from Phil Makhouli and singles from Nigel Mackenzie and Kevin Morris and Alness United chalk up a 4-0 away win against Bunillidh Thistle in Helmsdale.
With Alness United and Thurso playing in The Port Services Cup Semi-Finals Balintore took advantage with a thumping 6-0 win away in Dornoch. Balintore have a 100% record so far this season with a maximum 15 points from their opening five league fixtures scoring 23 goals in the process thanks to the scoring prowess of Ewan Dance and Lewis Ross. Golspie Sutherland kept up their own 100% record with their fourth league win and leap frog Alness United into second place with a 3-1 home win against Bonar Bridge.
